Jim Himelic Memorial Golf Classic

May 2nd

Since it began in 2001, Tucson's annual Jim Himelic Memorial Golf Classic, Dinner, Auctions and Dancing has raised $492,000 to benefit amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) research at The University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson. This year's event will be held Friday, May 2, at the Omni National Golf Resort & Spa, 2727 W. Club Drive, Tucson. The day's schedule includes:

11 a.m. -- Registration begins.
12:30 p.m. -- Shotgun start.
5:30 - 6:30 p.m. -- Cocktails/Silent Auction, Hopi Ballroom. Music by Ed Delucia's Trio.
6:30 - 8 p.m. - For the non-golfers: Dinner/Live Auction/Cash Bar, Papago Ballroom. Master of Ceremonies: Elliot Glicksman. Special appearance by Wilbur and Wilma Wildcat. Auction items include dinner for two with Sheryl Crow, prepared by her personal chef, and tickets to her Tucson concert; and a guitar autographed by John Mayer.
8 - 11:30 p.m. - Dancing with music by The Wayback Machine.

Organizers once again are asking the Southern Arizona community to participate in this fun-filled daylong event to support vital scientific research with the goal of improving our understanding of ALS and developing effective treatments that one day will lead to a cure. The event is named in honor of Jim Himelic, a friend of the Tucson community and much-respected juvenile court judge who died from ALS in February 2000. The foundation, which bears his name, was created by his family, friends and colleagues in 2000 to fund local ALS medical research. The goal of the Jim Himelic Foundation (JHF) is to raise $1 million in seed money to allow UA researchers to fund the preliminary research necessary for obtaining larger government and private grants to further their studies of ALS.

To register, or for more information about the Jim Himelic Memorial Golf Classic and ALS research at the UA, contact Ana Himelic, (520) 275-8187, AHimelic@hotmail.com, or visit the Web site, http://www.jimhimelicfoundation.org.

The Tucson-Almaty Sister Cities Committee

The Open World Program

Got your cultural antenna up? We have a signal for you. TASCC is participating in the Open World Program, which is designed to acquaint folks in Tucson with folks from the former USSR. On April 19th, five judges and lawyers will arrive in Tucson from Kazakhstan and will bring to five Tucson households the opportunity to learn about the country that gives Tucson a GREAT sister city connection. We have discovered.. SURPRISE, SURPRISE...that people around the world are pretty much the same. They are interesting, have children and pets and chocolate addiction; cars, parks and pretty mountains; love, hate and appreciate....just humans like us. What differs in the WAY they live, however. Their food is different, their respect of the ancients is different, the behavior of their children is different. SOOOO, invite a judge or a lawyer to your home for a week and get acquainted with the ways of people that live smack-dab in the middle of the Silk Road, that runs from Bejing, China to Istanbul, Turkey. Call Jerry at 886-1260, email him at jerrymgary@aol.com or visit our website at www.tucson-almaty.info.

Boy Scouts of America
-- Attention all youths ages 14 to 20. Are you interested in things like SCUBA, climbing and rappelling? Come learn what the Venturing Program is all about. For more information, email Paul Abbott at: paul@catalinacouncil.org.

US Karate Federation
-- Free self-defense classes through KoSho Karate are being scheduled. Call 887-4099 and ask for nine-time world karate champion Shihan Johnny Linebarger.

Café 54
-- The food is delicious and the service superb at downtown Tucson's Café 54. Even better, this is a cafe with a conscience, as evidenced by its hiring of people who are being treated for mental illness. The Tucson Citizen gives Café 54 two thumbs-up for its conscious decision to hire and pay people from Our Place Clubhouse, which works to rehabilitate those with mental illness. For information, call Café 54 at 622-1907.

Sonoran Sea Aquarium
-- The Sonoran Desert is North America’s only maritime desert. Our lush vegetation and high biodiversity is a direct result of having two rainy seasons annually, and our summer monsoon season exists because our desert embraces the Sea of Cortez. Learn how you can help save the Sea of Cortez by logging on to www.tucsonaquarium.com.
